Coco Chanel's youth was difficult, raised in an orphanage by nuns who taught her how to sew. After singing in clubs, she opened a millinery business, later making clothes that were loose fitting, taking women out of corsets forever.
She was the first to launch a perfume featuring her own name but received only 10% of what became huge profits. She sued to have her deal renegotiated but after gaining much success, was forced to close down her business during WWII. However, at the age of 70, she made a comeback. Reviews were initially scathing but her designs became iconic.
