Cindy Pitou Burton

Picture
Cindy Pitou Burton's family moved around quite a bit when she was child before ending up in Florida. She attended the University of Florida, where she studied art and graduated with a teaching degree. After college she moved to New York City, working as a flight attendant.

She began by photographing her children when they were young. She immediately felt at home behind the lens. Soon she was making portraits of her neighbors and her career took off from there, strictly through word of mouth. Her photography skills expanded through classes at the International Center for Photography, the School for Visual Arts in New York City.

It was her husband who suggested she seek magazine work. Pitou Burton was hired by the New York Times within days. As a photojournalist she found plenty of work. In addition to  the Times, she worked for television networks CBS, NBC and PBS, as well as a number of magazine and corporate clients.

Pitou Burton moved to Ojai in 1993. It was then that she pivoted away from photojournalism and into fine art photography. Her work now explores alternative photo processes. For example, her exquisite flower prints in this exhibition were photographed on a light box.

Her photographs are exhibited in major cities and represented by Getty Images. Pitou Burton is a member of the The American Society of Media Photographers and the Ojai Studio Artists.
