EARTH DAY

     The Ojai Valley Museum celebrated by opening its doors for free.

      The event featured special  special children's activities created by the Master Gardeners of Ventura County.

     Five hundred California native plants propagated especially for this event by Lawrence Nicklin of Plantasia Landscaping and Scott Smith of Euterpe Farms were sold.

Right:  Sam, a northern pygmy owl, made a guest appearance from the Raptor Center.  He probably lost the eye in an auto accident. 

     Scott and Lawrence (pictured at right)  answered questions regarding the care of these plants.

     Derrick Poltney of the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy spoke about the Native Plant Restoration at the Ojai Meadows Preserve. 

Dorothy Combs brought a pygmy owl from the Ojai Raptor Center.  Kids, such as Bebe,  and adults were fascinated. 

 

Vickie Mahan, a new Board member, is considering buying a cookbook to benefit Smart Start, from Marion Inchaustegui.

Museum Members Donna Dolan and Jade Smith were eager to take advantage of the low-priced plants, and no-priced advice.

     Deborah Edwards, Board member, and her husband, Craig, a volunteer, staff the refreshments table, offering water and snacks on the warm Spring Saturday.      Karen Ghormley, Museum member and event volunteer, and Chris Haley, Board member, staff the Treasures Sale.

 

Jan Timbrook, naturalist and author of Chumash Ethnobotany made a presentation followed by a book signing.

Chris Chapman, illustrator of the book, was also on hand to sell prints and note cards reproduced from his illustrations.

Marian Newman, at right, presented historical books for sale to visitors.

     The Ventura Chapter of the California Native Plant Society sold their book about the care and maintenance of California native plants.
  Museum Volunteers (including board member Rene Briggs) held a  Treasure Sale of artifacts and collectables.
