Howard Warshaw was
born and raised in New York City and studied at Pratt
Institute, the National Academy of Design Art School and the Art Students
League. In 1942 he moved west to
join his parents in southern California. He
went to work first in the animation studios of Disney and later at Warner Bros.
He taught at the short-lived Jepson Art Institute, where he was strongly
influenced by fellow teacher Rico Lebrun.
Beginning in 1951,
Warshow taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara for more than 20
years. Besides his UCLA mural, he did murals for the UC campuses in
Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Riverside.
